The previous night, in the drizzle, we briefly saw the burning ghat. This is the sacred cremation ground. Those who die in Varanassi attain enlightenment; the burning ghat is busy.
We woke up at 445am and caught an early morning boat up and down Varanassi at dawn. It is a picture from such a boat ride 20 years ago that inspired my second painting, so of course, I took a few more pics.
Later we walked the streets, shopped, and finally caught a train at 11:10pm for Delhi. The train was identical to the scary one we rode upon arriving in Delhi. The differences were only AC, one person per assigned bunk, and provided clean sheets, pillows and blankets. Everyone slept and we hung out with the family in our berth who had an 8 month old baby named avia. We all had a good time. A train has a way of encouraging good sleep.
Today we took the Delhi metro from the train station and hung out first in fashion row, then in a high-end mall. Interesting to see high-end India. Then we came back to our room in Saket to finish packing.
This train ride marked our trek home. In fact, Eric and Brennan are on a plane back to Chicago right now. The girls and I are heading back to Kathmandu, and then we will strart our trek home on Monday.
